Critical Incident Stress Management

(CISM)

CISM is an opportunity for emergency workers to deal with particularly bad events in a healthy way.  All services are provided by emergency workers that have been specially trained, such as:

Fire, EMS, Police, and Nursing,

Mental Health Clinicians

and/or Clergy members

They may be in the form of one-on-one interventions, small group meetings or large group meetings.

In addition, pre-incident training can be provided to departments or training units by special request.

All services are free of charge and confidential to those who request them.

A critical incident is a turning point event.

A critical incident is any event which has a stressful impact sufficient enough to overwhelm the usually  effective coping skills of either an   individual or a group.  Critical incidents are typically  sudden, powerful events which are outside the range of ordinary human experiences.  Situations that may be very traumatic to one person may not bother someone else at all.  This is as true of  emergency workers as it is for the general public.

Examples are:

· death or serious injury to a child

· multi-casualty incidents

· death or serious injury of a fellow emergency worker

· suicide or unexpected death of an emergency worker

· events involving intense media coverage

· events involving personal identification with the victim or circumstances

any incident involving prolonged or extraordinary rescue or recovery operations

To activate the CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) team:

· Designate a contact person or have the officer in charge (usually a chief) contact the dispatch center at Mayville, New York.
